 Principles of Design

The principles of design are balance, symmetry, asymmetry, and radial symmetry. There is also unity, harmony, rhythm, repetition, gradation, contrast, transition, and radiation.

Balance

Balance helps give an interior a sense of equilibrium and ensures that the inside does not seem overwhelming.

symmetry

Symmetry is like having a mirror in front of you, with the two sides looking the same. It is best used in formal spaces, as using it too much in homes would make the space seem smaller.

Asymmetry

Asymmetry gives an interior a sense of openness. It is excellent for living rooms and kitchens, where people spend more time.

Radial symmetry

  4. Irma,
I appreciated your concise but accurate summary of the three types of Balance. Your images were very supportive. Your image of radial balance was excellent. I loved that whole interior. The light fixture mimicked the seating arrangement. Good job on your sketch this week. 25/25 points
